What makes a good library great? 

Without question, it is the support the library receives from private citizens who understand and value the essential role a library plays in the life of the community.


Andrew Carnegie knew that. His $50,000 contribution helped build a library in Jacksonville in 1905. In 1986, The Foundation of Jacksonville, Inc. (d/b/a Library Foundation of Jacksonville) was formed as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation to carry forward Carnegie’s legacy that great libraries don’t just happen ... they must be nurtured.

The mission of the Library Foundation of Jacksonville is to inspire, advocate and grow philanthropic support for the Jacksonville Public Library in service to lifelong learners throughout our diverse community.

We provide the residents, corporations, and other stakeholders with opportunities to invest in the success of the Library. With private financial support, the Foundation expects to support and enhance the Library’s current funding system, not to replace the tax base and public community dollars so essential to the core of the Library mission. Managed by the Board of Directors, the Foundation is wholly independent of the City of Jacksonville, the Library, and the Library Board of Trustees.
